Akron/ Canton: Why Go
Akron/Canton: Fly & Drive -- Pieces of History Build a Modern Framework
A healthy respect for history and a pioneering spirit are abundant, but don't think for a second that the Buckeye State is stuck in the past.
Place we love, even if it?s touristy: Local Cantonites won't let you miss the Pro Football Hall of Fame. See vast collections of uniforms, balls, trophies, and more paraphernalia on display, reminisce about previous championships at the Super Bowl room, and cheer your team in the state-of-the-art Game Day Stadium Theater.
Best use of a converted mill: The Pie Factory revived the once-active Quaker Oats Company mill, and now serves up homemade pies in flavors from lemon meringue and key lime to banana creme and apple. Opt for a pie a la mode then grab a seat and watch the bakers at their craft. If pie?s not your thing, the made-from-scratch cakes, brownies, and oatmeal cookies are sure hits.
Where the locals go: The chef/owner of La Taqueria Rancheros in Akron hails from Michoacan, Mexico, so you know his food is the real deal. This shoebox-sized eatery features rich tamales, traditional specials, and $1 tacos on Saturdays. Less adventurous palates can still find Tex-Mex favorites like burritos and quesadillas. Or if you're craving a good ol' burger, go to Swenson's, get the Galley Boy, and wash it down with a "California," the pop of choice.
Chill-out spot: The Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath spans 110 miles between the Ohio River and Lake Erie. Runners, walkers, hikers, and bikers can get their blood pumping on this path which Native Americans trekked through hundreds of years ago.
Where to satisfy your sweet tooth: Canton boasts the largest chocolate store in the Midwest. Harry London Candies sells more than 500 kinds of candies and chocolate. Sample the milk chocolate and peanut butter Buckeyes or a mocha melt, or tour the factory during the week.
History lesson: John Brown was a local Akron abolitionist who was prominent in the movement to bring slaves from the South to freedom on the Underground Railroad. Visit his home and trace his role in the struggle to end slavery.
The real deal: Mustard Seed Market & Cafe is celebrating 25 years in Akron. As the largest certified organic market in northeast Ohio and a pioneer in the industry, this family-owned business is committed to offering nutritious, high-quality food. Find fresh produce or order something from the cafe like the cashew grilled chicken salad, American Bison burger, or the vegetarian tempeh Rueben.
Famous natives: Former U.S. President William McKinley called Canton home, and the McKinley Museum and National Memorial is a combination of a monument to this assassinated president and an interactive museum for the entire family. Stroll through a life-size 19th-century village or join in the fun at the interactive history and science exhibits.
